Keynote Speaker Steve Gilliland
Acclaimed Speaker, Best-Selling Author and Businessman

A member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, Steve Gilliland is one of the most in-demand and top-rated speakers in the world. His interactive and entertaining presentations motivate audiences to open doors to suc­cess in their careers, their relationships and their lives.

Gilliland is also the author of best-seller "Enjoy the Ride" and the founder of a multimillion-dollar com­pany named one of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the region by The Pittsburgh Business Times. His motto is straightforward: "If you take care of people, the business will follow." He received a bachelor's degree from Grove City College (Pa.) and an MBA from Globe University (Minn.).


Featured Speaker Dr. Barry Asmus
Senior Economist, National Center for Policy Analysis

Dr. Barry Asmus is a Senior Economist with the National Center for Policy Analysis and has been named by USA Today as one of the five most requested speakers in the U.S. Over the last 25 years, he has spoken to thousands of companies and associations throughout the country. He has also testified before the House Ways and Means Committee regarding the income tax system and was a featured speaker in a privatizing Social Security conference for Western European leaders.

Dr. Asmus is the author of nine books, including the H.L. Mencken Award-nominated "Crossroads: The Great American Experiment." As a professor of Economics, he was twice voted University Professor of the Year and was honored with the Freedom Foundation Award at Valley Forge for Private Enterprise Education. He also co-anchored a syndicated radio show called "Perspectives on the Economy."


Featured Speaker John Lass
SVP, Strategy & Business Development, CUNA Mutual Group

Speaker John Lass directs corporate strategic planning and CUNA Mutual Group's Business Development unit, with a focus on identifying and pursuing strategic diversification opportunities. He has worked extensively as a speaker and strategy adviser in the credit union system, both in the U.S. and worldwide. Previously, he headed the strategy practice at Hagberg Consulting Group (now part of Accenture). He also worked as a strategy consultant with the Boston Consulting Group.

Lass received a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he graduated as a Baker Scholar.


Session Instructor Michael Cochrum
Product Director, Analytics Products, CU Direct Corporation

Michael Cochrum has been working in the consumer lending industry since 1989 and has worked for some of the nation's largest and most profitable financial institutions. In 1999, he joined the credit union industry when he went to work for TCUL Credit Union in Dallas, Texas. In 2004, Cochrum joined CU Direct Corporation and helped create the largest credit union retail point-of-purchase lending network in the U.S. He currently oversees the national delivery of CU Direct's Lending Insights Loan Portfolio Management System, which provides credit unions with powerful portfolio analytics tools.

Over the past 20+ years, Cochrum has held positions in Collections, Asset Recovery, Credit Analysis, Underwriting and Product Management. He has an extensive background in portfolio risk management and profitable lending strategies and is a 2004 graduate of the Southwest CUNA Management School.


Session Instructor Dr. Steven R. Cunningham
Chief Economist, American Institute for Economic Research

Dr. Steven Cunningham joined the American Institute for Economic Research in 2010. He is an emeritus professor at the University of Connecticut, where he has been a member of the graduate faculty for more than 20 years. He was also the founder and first director of the Connecticut Center for Economic Analysis. The author of more than 100 articles, Dr. Cunningham is widely cited in the media and has made numerous appearances on national and regional television and radio.

He has served as: president of Cunningham Systems Corporation; research assistant to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; manager of corporate revenue, gross profit and pricing at AT&T Paradyne Corporation; staff mathematician and senior engineer at Harris Corporation; and senior scientist at ENSCO, Inc. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in economics from Florida State University.


Session Instructor Kristina Muller, CFA
Sr. Portfolio Manager, Balance Sheet Solutions

Kristina Muller is responsible for managing investment portfolios for credit union clients. She also collaborates with credit unions on balance sheet strategies and board education.

Muller previously served as an Investment Portfolio Manager with MemberTrade Advisory Services, LLC. and as a Trust Investment Officer at The Troy Savings Bank, where she managed both fixed income and equity portfolios. She holds a bachelor's degree and an M.A. from the State University of New York at Albany. She is also a designated Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
