As the trade association for 439 credit unions, the Credit Union Association of New York takes a lead role in promoting the health and well being of the credit union movement at the national, state, and local level. The Association ranks as the fifth largest credit union association in the country, has more than 100 employees, and provides services in several key areas, including:
As part of the Association’s mission to promote the credit union difference, the Community Development, Marketing and Communications Departments share the credit union philosophy with every influential audience in New York State—raising consumer awareness about credit unions and building essential relationships with both the media and the general public. Internally, the departments keep member credit unions informed of events within the movement. Community development and Communications play a critical role here, as outreach professionals have helped credit unions connect with diverse populations and educate their communities in financial matters.
Time and again, “virtual compliance officers” provide the right resources and the right answers to guide Association members through today’s complex regulatory environment. Specialists are on hand to answer compliance questions and work with credit unions on issues that affect them daily. On a broader scale, by maintaining close working relationships with the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the NYS Banking Department, and others, the Compliance Department builds productive relationships between credit unions and the agencies that regulate them.
In the true spirit of “people helping people,” Member Services is the nerve center for everything related to credit union development. Through the E & T department, a range of opportunities—chapter-sponsored sessions, trainers’ roundtables, local education programs, onsite training, and webinars—equip credit union volunteers and staff to excel in their duties. Through the Member Relations department, Association professionals consult with credit unions on their strategic planning, business plan development, financial analysis, forecasting, and other areas. Member Relations staff regularly visit credit unions to hear their concerns and provide the support they need. Small credit unions benefit from the Small Credit Union Knowledge Center, while all can get fast answers through the CU hotline. This department also manages the Events Calendar and Convention.
Governmental Affairs helps to define the future of credit unions by aggressively advocating on both state and federal levels. Over the years, the department’s professionals have secured major wins in the State Legislature, defeated anti-credit union legislation, advanced the cause of pro-credit union candidates, made an impact on federal bills, and helped credit unions organize as a grassroots movement to maximize their political clout.
