Federal benefit payments go electronic March 1; CUs should note MasterCard requirements

Consumers who receive federal benefit payments by paper check are required by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to switch to an electronic payment option by March 1. To help build awareness about the transition, credit unions are encouraged to promote the Go Direct campaign to their members.

Note: Credit unions under contract with MasterCard should review and confirm their requirements to honor Treasury Department-sponsored Direct Express Card, a MasterCard issued by Comerica Bank. Federal benefit payment recipients can use the card to make no-fee cash withdrawals through any financial institution displaying the MasterCard acceptance mark.

Registration open for fall CUDE training

Registration is now open for the National Credit Union Foundation's (NCUF's) fall Credit Union Development Education (DE) training. The training will be held Sept. 4-11 in Madison, Wis., and early registration is recommended due to limited space.

DE training is open to everyone, from new employees who need a credit union orientation to seasoned executives who need to recharge. Attendees will learn about credit unions' social responsibility and domestic and international development through interactive education and professional networking. They will return to their jobs with a new understanding of how to promote cooperative principles and credit union values as distinct advantages in today's competitive financial services marketplace.

After attending the last DE training in September 2012, Oswego County FCU Lending VP Aimee Johnson said, "I have always heard that DE Training will ‘change your life' but never realized it actually could. I have renewed my passion for the movement and the impact that all of us-as individuals or as a whole-can have on the world."

The training will take place at The Lowell Center, which is part of the University of Wisconsin campus. To assist with registration expenses, New York attendees can apply for Professional Development grants through the New York Credit Union Foundation (NYCUF). Details are available on the NYCUF website.
